Letters for Danny

Words from the people who know and love him

From Idalia
“My Dear and Precious Danny”
My dear and precious Danny. After all these years I can still remember seeing you for the very first time as you walked into our home. You may have been nervous and we may have seemed intimidating, but you walked in with a big smile on your face and outstretched arms ready to greet us with a warm embrace.

From the first moment I saw you I knew I would love you forever. I not only saw your handsome face but I felt your beautiful soul. I felt the sincerity in your heart and thoughtfulness in your words.

Since that providential meeting, you’ve become family. You’ve brought compassion, patience, and joy into our lives. You are a divine gift to me and many others.

When I think of you, I think of gratitude — gratitude for your presence, gratitude for your heart, and gratitude for the light you bring into the lives of others. Continue to shine your light on us all and may peace always surround your life. Remember, you will always have a home in Hebbronville, Vela Vista, and our hearts and prayers.

Happy 60th Birthday sweet Danny! I pray you always walk in light, knowing how truly loved you are. May every season of your life bring new blessings and lasting joy. May it always be filled with ‘Peaches’.
Love always, Idalia

“This Photo Is So Perfectly You”
Look at you — relaxed, smiling, completely at ease. You’ve never needed to be the center of attention, and somehow that’s exactly what makes you unforgettable.

You listen when others talk, you notice what others miss, and you have a gift for making people feel genuinely seen without ever making a big deal of it.

You love your family deeply and completely, and it shows in everything you do. The small things, the quiet ways, the steady presence — that’s you, always.

Jaime and I are truly blessed to have you in our lives, and even more blessed to call you family.

The Gift
I absolutely treasure the day I met you and Gilbert at Newfield. Oh, the times we have shared — the dinner parties, the backyard parties, the conversations around the fire pit, the theater and concerts, Sonoma, and so much more!

You have been such a wonderful friend through the years and are part of the fabric that is the tapestry of my life. You have been there celebrating some of the best times of my life and have been a huge supporter during the most difficult times.

You are a gift of the best kind: smart, elegant, funny, loyal, honest, handsome, present, and my go-to dance partner. I cherish you with all of my heart. Thank you for being you — you are one of a kind and genuinely priceless.
I love you to the moon and back — Babs

The Car Will Come to Me

It was New York. The plan was simple: walk to the corner, catch the Uber, save twenty minutes. A perfectly reasonable plan. Danny said no.

He said it without drama. Without apology. The way a man says something that is simply, quietly, correct.

“The car will come to me.”

The car came to him. They were late. It was absolutely fine.

The Night He Remodelled His Parents’ Home

His parents went to dinner. Danny assessed the staircase railing and made a design decision.

He gathered his sisters. They removed it. Not because it was broken — because it was no longer necessary. The house needed to be more contemporary.

His parents came home to a home that had been quietly, definitively, improved.

The China Drawer

It was their second date. At the entry of the house stood a dresser. Danny opened it with the unmistakable pride of a man revealing something wonderful.

Inside: china. Stuffed drawers of it. Different patterns. Different eras. All chosen. All beautiful.

In that moment, she understood: there is a little old lady inside this man, and she has exquisite taste.

The Indignant Bitch (Said With Absolute Love)

Danny has a nickname that he is, against all probability, completely fine with — because the people who gave it to him love him more than nearly anyone.

The part that winces at vulgarity in public. The part with perfectly calibrated standards.

But when he decides to air his own dirty laundry? It is the most fun you will ever have.

Nina & the French Radio

Nina Simone is not background noise in Danny’s world — she is the soundtrack to his soul. To be in a room where she’s playing and Danny is present is to understand something about what it means to truly appreciate beauty.

He speaks French. He’ll tell you he doesn’t. Don’t believe him. There is something deeply European and unhurried living inside this man — a refusal to accept anything merely adequate.

His husband Gilbert’s favourite is Whitney Houston. If those two had ever recorded a duet, it would have been absolute magic. The perfect soundtrack for Danny and Gilbert.

Mom, Daddy, and the Fam

There is a room in Danny and Gilbert’s home where Joan — Danny’s mother — stayed when she visited. Danny made it beautiful for her. Of course he did.

The peacock panels on the wall. The gold-leaf chandelier. The warmth of it. It is a room that says, without words: you are cherished, you are held, you are home.

That room still exists. Still holds her presence — turning love into something you could walk into and feel.

He carries his father with him too — in a watch, in quiet moments, in things he doesn’t always speak about but never stops feeling.

Where He
Came From

He did the ancestry test. The results came back: somewhere within 2% of being completely, entirely, gloriously Irish — from one very specific, very concentrated corner of Ireland.

Last year, he went. He stood where his family stood. He walked that land and breathed that Atlantic air.

He came back changed. Quieter about it than you might expect — which means it mattered more than almost anything. He understood who he was a little bit more.
